Watering a lawn sounds simple — turn on the sprinkler, let it run, done. But improper watering is one of the leading causes of lawn problems in Minnesota, from shallow roots and fungal disease to wasted water and higher utility bills. A well-designed irrigation system changes all of that.

Here are some facts and tips about irrigation that might surprise you — and help you get more out of every drop.

Fun Fact: Most Homeowners Overwater Their Lawns

It sounds counterintuitive, but overwatering is far more common than underwatering. Studies from the EPA estimate that the average American household uses about 30 percent of its water outdoors — and roughly half of that is wasted due to overwatering, evaporation, and runoff.

Too much water is just as harmful as too little. Constantly saturated soil drives oxygen out of the root zone, suffocating grass roots and creating ideal conditions for fungal disease. It also encourages shallow rooting — grass has no reason to grow deep roots when moisture is always available at the surface.

The 1 to 1.5 Inch Rule

Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and fescue — the most common types in Minnesota — need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. During peak summer heat, that can climb to 2 inches.

The key is delivering that water deeply and infrequently rather than a little every day. Two or three longer watering sessions per week encourage roots to grow 4 to 6 inches deep, where soil moisture is more stable. Daily shallow watering keeps roots in the top inch of soil — the zone that dries out fastest in heat.

Quick test: Push a screwdriver into your lawn after watering. It should slide in easily to about 6 inches. If it stops at 2 to 3 inches, you're not watering deeply enough.

Fun Fact: Grass Tells You When It Needs Water

You don't always need a timer or a moisture sensor to know when to water — your lawn will tell you.

Look for these signs of mild drought stress:

  • Footprints stay visible after you walk across the lawn — healthy, hydrated grass springs back immediately; stressed grass stays flat
  • Blades fold or curl lengthwise — the plant is reducing its surface area to conserve moisture
  • Color shifts from bright green to blue-gray — this is one of the earliest signs of water stress, before any browning occurs

Catch it at this stage and a good deep watering will green the lawn back up within 24 hours. Wait until it turns brown and recovery takes longer.

The Best Time to Water Is Early Morning

Timing matters almost as much as amount. Early morning — between 4 and 9 a.m. — is the ideal window for irrigation:

  • Evaporation is minimal — cooler temperatures and calm air mean more water reaches the soil
  • Wind is typically low — sprinkler patterns stay accurate and coverage is even
  • Grass dries before evening — wet grass overnight is an open invitation for fungal disease like brown patch and dollar spot

Midday watering loses 30 to 50 percent of water to evaporation before it ever reaches the roots. Evening watering leaves grass wet all night. Morning wins every time.

Fun Fact: Sprinkler Systems Can Be Surprisingly Inefficient Without Proper Setup

A sprinkler system is only as good as its design and calibration. Common problems that waste water and produce uneven results:

  • Head-to-head coverage gaps — sprinkler heads should overlap so each head reaches the next one. Gaps create dry spots; overlaps create soggy zones.
  • Mixed head types on the same zone — rotary heads and fixed spray heads apply water at very different rates. Running them on the same zone means one type is always over- or under-watering.
  • Clogged or tilted heads — a single clogged head can leave a 10-foot circle dry while the rest of the zone is saturated

Winterizing Your System Matters More Than You Think

In Minnesota, failing to properly winterize an irrigation system before the ground freezes is one of the most expensive mistakes a homeowner can make. Water left in pipes, valves, and heads expands when it freezes and can crack PVC pipes, split valve bodies, and destroy backflow preventers — repairs that can run into the hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Proper winterization involves using a commercial air compressor to blow out all water from every zone, then shutting down the controller and draining the backflow preventer. This should be done before the first hard freeze — typically late September to mid-October in the Monticello area.
